Hi All
I currently have my PS3 connected by hdmi to the tv and via optical to my amp. This way the kids don't need to have everything switched on when they play their games.
I am going to buy a new PS4 but the slim version doesn't have optical out. Is there any other way I can link to TV and amp to retain the same functionality as what I have now or do I need to wait fortune PS Pro?
My amp does have hmdi pass through when it is on standby but it isn't simple for the kids to use and I need it to be simple otherwise I get into to trouble :rotfl:
Any ideas gratefully received
Thank you
Matt

Check if your TV has an optical out (although this has some provisos)
otherwise you can use something like this
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tendak-Optical-Extractor-Converter-Splitter/dp/B01850K40M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477824611&sr=8-1&keywords=HDMI+to+HDMI+and+Optical0 -
Thanks RobTang. The TV does have optical out but the PS3 detects the tv via HDMI as stereo only source. So when I connect optical to amp from tv only stereo sound is detected.
Mayb I can force it to send 7.1 to the tv?. Will also take a look at the gadget you linked to
Thanks

RE the Stereo thing, this is why I mentioned with provisos, the HDMI spec says a device is not allowed to re-transmit any part of the signal unless that is again though HDMI.
Meaning the only way you can do it properly is to do what you said and use the HDMI pass-through on the amp.
The devices like the only linked however don't strictly speaking have to stick the spec tho so they can sorta get away with bending it.0 -
Buy the old PS4, or wait for the Pro. The Slim is the only one that lacks optical.
Most TVs can't pass through full surround sound. Picture and sound should go source-amp-TV, the TV should always being at the end. You're able to short circuit this with the HDMI going into the TV, and getting sound optionally through optical on the amp. Does your amp have HDMI, and does it perhaps have a passthrough feature?0
