Surround sound speakers

Can somebody please help me. Ihave just got a new 32" lcd tv and am having problems connecting my 5.1 speakers to it. Out of sub I have 3 leads marked as follows :-

Front
Rear
Sub.

I also have a Virgin media box which is connected to the tv with a HDMi lead. Looking at the back of the tv there are a lot of inputs and outputs but none that correspond to what is on the leads. On the old TV it had outputs marked the same as the leads so was easy to connect. I have managed to connect the speakers to the DVD box and have brilliant sound when watching dvds but i want the speakers on when watching the TV. Does anybody know how to connect the leads up either to the virgin media box or the TV so that I can have the speakers working.

And advice appreciated.

  • Sounds like you need some sort of surround amp if you want to connect 5.1 speakers. Your TV must have had some sort of built in amp. Usually a TV won't have audio outputs just inputs. The outputs usually come from your source ... in this case the Virgin media box. Usually you'd have a coax output or optical output from your source going into your surround amplifier which in turn connects to your 5.1 speakers.

Your old TV might have had a 5.1 decoder and outputs ready to wire straight in to the sub/amp.

Which model is the new TV?

Did the sub come from the old TV package?

my new tv is a Sanyo. No the sub came as part of the speaker system. It came as a package with a sub and 5 speakers. any ideas????
  • Use optical or coaxial cable from Virgin Media to sub. Depends on what input connections you have on the sub.

all i have is a unit with knobs on the front to turn the front, rear, centre and woofer down. out of the back of it is the wires going to the speakers. it then has the 3 leads as mentioned before that have like headphone jacks on the end.
  • There must be some input socket somewhere. Sounds like the 3 leads are the inputs and that the sub is designed specifically to work with your old TV. Usually you'd have a raft of input options on the back of the sub.

the thing is is that there are connections on the back of the dvd plyer too that work. id there no way of maybe playing the audio through the dvd player. not sure if that is possible.

Your DVD, like your old TV, probably has decoded outputs so that the 5.1 is available via phono sockets.

If you do not have coaxial or optical i/p on your sub then the best your likely to get is stereo o/p from the TV connected to the FRONT i/ps (unless it has decoded outputs too).
