limited program access on work computer

Options
I have limited program access on my work pc, my question is - I have a hard-drive mp3 player - is it possible to load windows xp onto this and use it to override the pc's hard-drive therefore letting myself be able to use whatever programs I want???

Thanks in advance

I'm assuming that you have limited access due to your company's IT security policy. I wouldn't advocate you trying to bypass this for any reason as it would usually result in an instant dismissal.

I very much doubt it, I work for a uni and you can link up your laptop to the network with no limited access so that's no real diff!

I wouldn't bother trying. I'd guess there will be a Windows 2003/2000 domain controller and the restrictions with be controlled by group policy objects (GPO's) (you can do it with XP but it's easier with a server). It would require relaxing of the group policy objects, which you won't have access to.

This is not the same as bypassing their security. The computer belongs to them and the reason they have the sceurity in place is to minimise the work that they have to do by preventing people who don't know what they are doing from messing around with files etc.

If you work for a university I would imagine they have just about every piece of software avilable, why not just go to the IT support and explain what you need the application installed for, I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you.

If I was a your Administrator I probably wouldn't allow it.
Reasons: Security risks (copy sensitive files to device and possibility of allowing trojans, worms and viruses into the system).
Other reasons: Reduced productivity while you look for MP3's to download, stealing of company bandwidth.

but then again I do read BOFH regularly :p

My guess is if its a college you'll have signed some sort of network user agreement and by bypassing proper entry you'd be breaking that agreement and would suffer the consequences.

Heck! I ban students from the net in my Skills Improvement Centre in college just for playing games. They signed to say they wouldn't do it and some feel their network user agreement can just be ignored.
Its fun watching them trying to log on to finish a late piece of exam work and being unable to.

Uni is different from college - you can do what the heck you like - games, downloads, whatever.

I'm probably not going to bother but as I said before I can connect a laptop to the network and do exactly as I wish so I doubt I'd be breaking any agreement

If BOFH was in charge at this uni, I think there would be another candidate for the lift shaft if they tried to reinstall the OS.

Nah, get the PFY to do that. BOFH might take them on a visit to the fireproof tape safe and accidentally lock them in.
