Compact digital camera

DH has a Samsung digital camera which I must say takes great photos for an aim and shoot type camera. Didn't cost much but now it is kept together with elastic bands because the card keep falling out.

The family clubbed together to buy him some fancy affair he liked the look of, but it is big and cumbersome so stays mainly indoors.

Thinking of Christmas and maybe getting him another compact camera to replace the one falling to bits. I am totally flummoxed when reading camera reviews as what is needed.

Can anyone here guide me on a good one to buy. He likes to take videos on the camera so that would be a must. Cost, well no more than £200 and hopefully a lot less.

  • My old Panasonic gave up the ghost earlier this year and I got a Nikon Coolpix S7000 - very pleased with it. It has a great zoom.

  • Which best buys are good indicators when one is trying to buy 'good' but not 'specialised' for most people.

Top comes Nikon coolpix aw130 that is a ruggedised cam at £199, Canon power shot s200 comes next, cheaper at £174 not ruggedised but better quality pix even at slightly lower (but still good resolution) , Canon Ixus 285 next at £154, and then still very respectable Nikon cool pix sl 7000 with 20 times zoom at only £129. -all from the under £200 range.

Prices are quite variable and seem to fluctuate a fair bit over time. That last cam had been as low as £99 but is currently available at John Lewis to collect (according to info as of yesterday).

Before buying however do make sure somehow it is what he would like as after (I presume) using a DSLR he needs to understand the benefits of a pocket sized cam over the versatility of the DSLR......but at £129 for a carry with you at all times snapper, I would have one too!

I fairly recently bought the canon ixus. There are a couple of features that were important to me. Firstly a lithium rechargeable battery and secondly that it's able to connect to wifi. I think I paid around £115 from John Lewis. Takes good pics too.
