Windows update that stalls

Yesterday and a few months ago I left my laptop for a while and when I came back it was doing an update,on both occasions I had to wait a long time, overnight it got to 91% (this was about 8 hours minimum) I turned the laptop off as I did the previous time, when it came back on it said it was reverting to its previous version.
Its Windows 10 Home, Any idea what is going on?

By turning it off BEFORE the update had finished installing, you probably corrupted some of the new update files and some of the system files as well.

It has now gone back to the point where it would have been before the original update attempt and, as a result, updates will take longer to install until it's finished installing the very latest update.

You will find that it will get to e certain point when updating and appear to be doing nothing - you will just have to wait and let it finish what it's doing and this could take several hours.

I have an 8 year old laptop with Win 10 installed and that took 16 hours to finish installing the Win 10 Anniversary update.
