Credit Card in South Korea

Hello All,
I'm wondering if you could give a travel newbie some un-complicated advice?

I am planning to move to South Korea for 12 months early next year.

I've never had a credit card before but i've been told it will be cheaper to take on holiday. As I am not going on holiday but living in a new country I am not sure if this the best option for me?

Whilst living abroad, I would still have to pay for my car (that's on finance)and maybe my phone bill so I am not sure how that would work as I currently have a normal bank card.

Any advice?

Halifax Clarity is one suggestion, as it has no forex fees. However, you may be limited on options if you have limited credit history.

Your other bills would continue to be paid by direct debits or manual payments from your bank account.

Yes, if you choose the right one:

However, for living there, depending on your circumstances, a Korean bank account and mobile phone would be more or less necessary.

In the transition, instead of a UK credit card, which may become inconvenient to administer from there, Revolut could be useful:

By the way, there's an Overseas board where you're more likely to get specific advice for your travels.
    Evolution, not revolution
  • Thank you zx81 for the reply.

I actually don't know what my credit history health is looking so I will need to investigate. Also il look into Halifax Clarity. Thanks again
  • Thanks eDicky for the info. I've never heard of revolut before but it gives me a little more confidence that's it's more than an app, there's also a "physical" card to have.
But I will need to do more research as the thought of me losing my phone out there, could possibly leave me financial stranded!
But again thank you for the info

You can give yourself other options in the off chance you lose your phone. Take more than 1 means of access to cash.

Or just don't lose your phone, keep it in a safe place or pocket rather than a bag.
