Retired couple thinking of spending New Year abroad for a change, few days in a European city, possibly Eastern. Don't mind cold or snow as long as there's stuff happening, places to go, things to do. Suggestions and ideas welcomed...

budget may be key here...type of accommodation?...some hotels sell minimum stay over New Year or with a Gala Dinner package only0

I did Krakow for NYE a few years back, was really good fun, they put on a concert in the main market square with a big countdown to midnight and fireworks.
Loads of bars and clubs and very well priced! :beer:0 -
Budget is a good point; that I hadn't thought of it means it's not that important I suppose - a grand or two? Yes a 'gala dinner' would be OK - is that the same as a NYE party? Certainly a city which celebrates NY openly would be preferable, had considered St Pete but cannot get visas in time as wife is about to go to Oz for a few weeks. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0

I had a splendid time in Munich with a side trip to Salzburg a couple of years back and found it ticked all boxes - Great fun, surprisingly economic (business hotel, so quite cheap) great fun and more snow than you could ever hope to see!

Considering Bratislava, Prague or Reykjavik - would welcome more thoughts and opinions! The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0

Can't say anything for them but it would be great to read what you made of them when you get back!

Sorry but I don't know the places you're looking at well enough to comment. For what it's worth, a second vote here for Salzburg & Munich. Zurich's great too, and many of the alpine villages in Switzerland and Austria have torchlit ski runs down into the village at midnight. I've also spent a few great Christmases in Athens. It's hilarious watcing Greeks trying to ice skate in Syntagma Square after months of watching Swiss skate as if they were born to it.0

Bratislava is very nice but pretty small and not a huge amount to do, we spent two nights there as part of a longer trip and that was plenty.
Prague is good and a well known destination with a reasonable amount to do, still fairly good value but obviously a lot more tourists.
Not been to Reykjavik, seems to be plenty to do there if you've got the cash.
I think Krak!w could be a good option, but there are so many options particularly as your budget isn't tight, any more info on interests as that might jog a few more responses.
Maybe look at the Baltic states too?0 -
We spent New Year in Prague a while ago. Fireworks going off everywhere. We went up to the castle for the midnight display. New Year's Day there was another display which we watched from the bridge by the National Theatre.
Great atmosphere but it was absolutely freezing -15C at night and well below freezing during the day.0
