Things seemed to have changed recently. When I got my previous car the dealership were at great pains to tell me that it came with 7 days insurance but this time around, like you, I had to arrange and provide a copy of my own insurance certificate before I could collect the new car. Even if I did have the option of drive away insurance I'd still make sure I'd change my own insurance over on that day regardless.

Me too, I've never seen less than a £750 excess on the drive away policies.

When I bought my new bike earlier in the year, BMW's ride away insurance had an excess of £1500.

Luckily it was absolutely beasting it down on the day so they offered to deliver it instead and I never had to 'ride away'. With 200BHP to play with I'm quite glad my first ride wasn't in torrential rain on brand new tyres or I might have been needing that insurance.

How did the garage manage to tax the car in your name without evidence of insurance being in place?

My last car didn't have an option for short term insurance. The car was taxed just prior to handover using my insurance policy.

Insurance is not checked when taxing a vehicle, hasn't been since 2014 if I remember rightly.

Also, if this were a new vehicle, it's taxed at time of registration for the first 12 months anyway.

When I transferred my insurance both cars were covered for the one day.
