A lot of people recommend foxit. Although personally I've never had a problem with Adobe Reader. What's your OS?

Save the attachment to your desktop. Then right click on it and select Open With. Chose Acrobat and tick the box to always use that program.

You can tell Adobe Reader not to auto-update, by using the settings in Edit > Preferences > Update.

And also you could block it using your firewall too.

Only this morning whilst doing a bit of spring cleaning on my pc I found Adobe Reader hidden in my Start Up list. Dunno what it was doing in there, it obviously hid itself when I downloaded Adobe 8 a few weeks ago.

The startup entry pre-loads part of Acrobat Reader into memory so that it will open quickly.

Obviously this reduces the amount of memory available to other programs, making them a bit slower. This is incredibly irritating if you rarely use Acrobat Reader and would like your PC as fast & "streamlined" as possible!

I remember someone posting a tip on here a good while ago for speeding up Adobe Reader by preventing it loading lots of features. It worked a treat but I can't remember what it was! Does anyone else remember? I'm pretty sure it was recommended by MSE Martin himself at the time.

Hmm... I remember seeing this on some website a few years ago too. It wasn't one of these, was it?

No - it wasn't software, it was just some changes you could make to the way the programme started up (without loading all sorts of unnecessary functions). Anyone else remember it?

EDIT: Found it saved on my PC!!

    Here you go:
    Speed up ADOBE acrobat reader!

This came from FurryGoat who got it from Sanjay's Coding Tips who found it at Darrell Norton's blog. It's a short list of things to do to speed up the launching of Adobe's Reader

machine upgrade...It is all the plug-ins that are enabled by default slowing Acrobat reader down. After removing all but 3, it loads pretty much instantly.

Here's how to do it: VERY SIMPLE!! VERY EFFECTIVE!!

Go to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader (replace the C if you installed on another drive, like I did).

Create a new folder called plug_ins_disabled.

Move all files from the plug_ins folder to the plug_ins_disabled folder except EWH32.api, printme.api, and search.api.

There should only be these 3 files in the plug_ins folder.

    You're done.

    Enjoy.

Tried this with reader 7, seems to work although there does not seem to be a Print-me.api. Left both search api's where they should be.

    Wow seems much faster!

This does a similar thing with many more tweaks to choose from

Makes it lighting fast and you can change back to the old settings quickly

Edit: poppycat has found a more recent version - see below

That really does work. Didn't take long to download and it goes straight to the document without any messing around. It's great improvement so many thanks.

Tried the program with version 7 Pro and seems to load up quicker. Thanks

I found a newer version of pdfsu

    http://www.acropdf.com/products.html

Version v1.42 where as the link posted was version v1.32

Just tried the tip on Reader 7.0. Loads like lightning but have so far had two errors (...has encountered a problem and needs to close).

Will try switching back a few plug-ins from the new folder until it stops having problems.
