There are positives to smart meters. Personally I can t be bothered sending readings in .I am very happy to have my usage monitored by my supplier. My supplier cannot easily disconnect me.If there are power cuts we all get cut off smat or dumb.I do not get involved in fanciful ideas about hackers.I ve been on the internet for 12 years and never had a problem. I bank via online accounts I cannot understand the worries over smart meters. Suppliers can stop debts reaching levels where a costly court warrant has to be taken out. Hundreds of thousands of customers get into debt problems due to negligence in submitting readings. Many of these, because of the high level, end up not getting paid. This increases supplier debts to pass on in the form of higher kwh rates. Theft of energy is harder to do with smart meters which also increases honest consumers prices.

I have a smart meter and I like it as my bills are accurate and I only pay for what I use. As for the energy companies' increasing profits, that could also be down to the fact they no longer have to pay meter readers due to the very nature of how smart meters work.

It will be interesting to see what the energy companies do in terms of tariffs as smart meters do allow different rates for different times of the day, even different days of the week.
