Transfer Credit Limit from MBNA to Virgin

I am sure that I have read that this is possible somewhere on here, but I can't find it. I would like to know if anyone has done it, and what I should do.

I have just applied for a Virgin Credit card. I have a very old MBNA card that I no longer use. As Virgin is provided by MBNA, is it possible to ask Virgin to 'merge' the two cards, i.e. close the MBNA card and transfer the available credit limit to the Virgin card?

I transferred some of my limit from an old closed MBNA account to a new one - didn't even know it was possible until the guy at the call centre told me, tried to do this inbetween an MBNA and Sony (owned by MBNA) card and they wouldn't let me!? Maybe it's luck of the draw, it is possible though if that helps.

This should be possible - indeed it was Virgin that drew this to my attention - so go ahead and ask.

One minor distinction: If you 'close' a card in order to access the limit on a new card this does not take effect immediately. But if you just ask to 'switch' most of the credit limit to the new card, instead, leaving a minimal limit on the old card, then it does. So if you need to do a single large transfer immediately, and there is a capped fee, say, [not with new Virgin cards, I understand] then this could be the better option. Good luck

Got in one. MBNA continued to up my limit even though I never use the card. I want to stooze all of this on my new Virgin card. Thanks for your advice, I'll let you know how I get on. I would welcome any more advice.

Have just cleared my balance at the end of 9 months 0% with mbna card - £3500 limit, but have until September at 0% with Virgin but only a £1000 credit limit. Am also thinking of asking for some of my credit limit to be be xferred from MBNA to Virgin, so it might be useful to know how you fared?

I've not tried yet. I will hopefully be doing it before the end of the year.
