Building Contents Insurance Advice - House Deeds

I wonder if any insursance experts can advise me about this please - my mothers buildings & contents insurance is due - she has always had them with the building society who hold the house deeds - she has no mortgage - can she move her insurance elsewhere ? She thinks for the building society to hold the deeds she needs her buildings & contents insurance with them. Is this correct because she has been quoted far cheaper elsewhere? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

She may be right that they may only hold the deeds for free for "customers".
She has several choices.
1) Put them somewhere safe at home. Most are now held electronically at the land registry so they aren't as important as they used to be. I would still recommend keeping them somewhere dry, clean and safe.
2) If she has a solicitor then most will store them securely for free.
3) She could pay the building society to keep them. This is probably a "rip-off" but it's an option if she feels more comfortable with it and it might still be cheaper to do this.
If she is feeling paranoid about them then there's no reason why someone with a scanner can't store them and keep them electronically in a seperate place.
When I send something important through the post I always scan it in case it's "lost in the post".0
