Is scrapping our best option

Hi,
We have replaced my husbands car already but are needing to do something with his old car. It needs a new engine. Is scrapping our best option? Where is best to go to get it scrapped? Want to get as much money for it as we can.
TIA

  • You'll be lucky to get anything for it as scrap. If it's a common make/model just give the council a call. Last time I needed to scrap a car the council took it for free (this was in 2001 mind you!)

Put it on eBay, mentioning all known faults. Metal recycling firms pay little for scrap cars.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • It's a vauxhall astra 57 plate. Pretty good condition other than the engine
  • as suggested you could try selling as a non runner on ebay but take into account the fees and it may not be worth it ( plus the hassle ). If you break it yourself you then get lumbered and most places wont want to touch it after that.

try www.scrapcarnetwork.org but keep in mind prices anywhere for scrap are ROCK BOTTOM so might not be worth as much as youre hoping for. OUCH £31!

sell it on e bay as a non runner for spares or repair somebody will buy it as a parts car or to fix it up

you will get nothing for scrapping it and it may even cost you to get it taken away

2 years ago got £90 and a free tow away from the garage for a 2005 plate 206 car that would have been a write off if I'd claimed on the insurance following a skid on ice - needed too much work internally though the bodywork was all fine.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • It all depends which model, how many miles etc to answer the question fully.

Plenty of second hand engines for astras available, so if the rest of the car is good, why not buy a second hand engine and pay a garage to fit it. Is the value after changing the engine MORE than the salvage value, plus the cost of a second hand engine and labour ?

I attempted to sell a 140K Honda accord diesel on a 54 plate on ebay, and experience was dire.
I priced up the engine, which was steep for a second hand one, factored in 3 days of misery to swap it, factored in everything else wrong with it, and the value when fixed and decided I'd rather not bother.
So selling via ebay seemed a great idea but People bidding and not paying or others paying but not coming to take it away. In the end a local breaker took it. Knowing what second hand parts go for on a rare(ish) car like that meant that they could make their money back just by selling a couple of doors.

Look on ebay and gumtree to see what that year sells for (with faults)
and sell it on one of those, if you scrap it you will get a couple of quid.

There's nothing wrong with it, so torch it and claim on the insurance.
