Trick or Treat, Not Comp related

I find Halloween less annoying than penny for the guy or Christmas carols to be honest. At least it's confined to one or two nights, and round us, everyone is pretty well behaved.
If houses are decorated, then you can knock on. If there are no Halloween decorations, you leave them alone. So most houses with children have decorations and sweets, and most others don't. Seems to work quite well.
A friend of mine and her husband did a variation of the whole knocking on the door last year by just leaving a huge bowl of sweeties next to the front gate with a sign saying 'Plenty for all, if you just take one each - BRATS' Anyway, it all went well for about 30mins, until one kid and his dad came along, and promptly emptied the entire bowl in the sack they were carrying, and threw the bowl into next doors garden. Greedy s*ds
Needless to say, Trick or Treat is now banned at their house. I told her she was lucky, 'cos where me Mam lives, they would have pinched the bowl as well :rotfl:
Last year there were a few cracking videos from America showing what lengths folk (mainly adults) will go to to get free sweets. It's worth having a potter on the t'internet to see if you can find them. It's enough to put anybody off :rotfl::eek::mad:BEST EVER WINS WON IN ORDER (so far) = Sony Camcorder, 32" lcd telly, micro ipod hifi, Ipod Nano, Playstation 3, Andrex Jackpup, Holiday to USA, nintendo wii, Liverpool vs Everton tickets, £250 Reward Your thirst, £500 Pepsi, p&o rotterdam trip, perfume hamper, Dr Who stamp set, steam cleaner.

Halloween - Monday only .... any other night is just taking the mick
and the only time I will be opening the door is to throw a bucket of water at them
But also don't forget Mischief Night - the night before

We have that the day before Bonfire Night (another waste of time n money) around here. All shops are banned from flogging eggs to kids for about 4 days before.
We got a giant pack thrown at our house/windows last year, still waiting for the police to come and pick up the scroat who did it - they have a full description, right down the the colour of the rather expensive looking bike. Thirty minutes of my life I won't get back waiting on hold to speak to someone. So much for 'extra patrols' Pah!!
I don't mind admitting that I HATE this time of year.

Ahh you see, I dont mind getting involved! You can pick up a multi pack of halloween themed sweeties from the poundshop so it doesnt cost me much.
What frustrates me is my friend and neighbour grumbles saying she's not answering the door, but happily took her children Trick or Treating when they were younger!
Imagine how exciting it must be for children? I pop a little pumpkin in the window so the kids know they're welcome to knock here, although in recent years I haven't had many.0 -
Well, I've not had anyone knocking yet (as of 10:30PM on Sunday) ... I have been out all day today though and only got in about half an hour ago.0

I've never had anyone come around before Halloween, personally would find it very odd if they did too, Halloween is Halloween, no other day. Although I do find they tend to bring their children around earlier on weekdays.
I don't have children myself, but I do have pets that can get spooked, but I try my best to keep them calm and do hand out sweets.
But the general rule as stated by others, if the house isn't decorated or have any pumpkins out, then you do not knock.
I do find that some years I get quite a few kids and others the occasional one, if any. One year we had a huge tub of sweets and hundreds came, I ran out so ended up handing out cheap chocolate bars that were in the cupboard (they were lucky that we even had anything) - there was nothing wrong with them, other than they weren't made by Mars or Cadbury's etc. just supermarket own brands, although as I closed the door I heard them say, yuck! Is that all we get? It really did make me question why I bothered doing it. But then I remembered all of the other appreciative children that had fabulous costumes and I put a smile on their faces.
There is always some ungrateful children or people wanting something 'better' or even money! But I can't let it ruin it for the others.
If it were me, I would be grateful it was in packaging, as there are people that hand out Harribo and loose sweets, if I were a parent I would like them to be packaged if my children were to eat them, as you don't know where they have been or what they actual are, as you hear so many horror stories.Thank you to everyone who posts competitions and good luck to everyone who enters.0 -
Well, after all that ... I didn't get anyone knocking, I deliberately didn't decorate but I didn't sit here in the dark either
... lot of kids milling about but nobody came knocking, now I've got a big pile of sweets making the place look messy
