retaining my No Claims Discount

Just wondered what people’s experiences were with losing their NCD when they have taken a break from insuring a car.
I have managed to accrue 20 years of NCD and obviously this earns me very substantial discounts when it comes to the cost of a policy.
However, a change of job now means that the car goes virtually unused apart from the occasional drive out at weekends. As a result, I am considering saving myself a fortune and switching to 2 wheels. Cheaper to insure, tax, run and suitable for my commute.
So roughly how long could I do this for without losing my NCD when I come to return to 4 wheels as I no doubt will ?
