I'm old enough to remember when the banks would allow you to pay in to any bank at any bank without being charged.

I remember those days too. Back in the 1980s I regularly paid Bank of Scotland cheques into my Williams & Glyn's (later RBS) account over the counter at the Midland Bank.

or just post them if I'm flushed.

Down in the dumps? Down the pan?

Or at a certain time of life?:)
  • I use Co-op bank and have deposited cheques at the Post Office many times. It's so easy.
Terms state clearance can be up to 10 working days but I used to find it was about 4 working days until the last time I deposited one it took nearly two weeks.
Since then I have opened another bank account and deposit cheques in there. I like Co-op for their customer service and the internet banking is so easy but since they reopened a local branch and then closed it again I am missing it, particularly as I regularly have to deposit cheques.

Cheques deposited through the Post Office into any bank account take the same amount of clearance time.

The delays happen because they have to be sent, received and processed by the bank before the cheque is actually paid into the account. Then and only then does the normal clearance process start.
