E mails via gumtree

I sometimes post items for sale on Gumtree and a couple of times I have got a reply by text saying that they are interested in buying the item and asking me to contact them via the email that they have texted me
My question is why do they not contact me by email via Gumtree ? I do not reply to these texts as I fear that it could be part of a scam
Also can a buyer on Gumtree see your email address

We recently had one of these. We did reply and received an email stating that they wanted the object but due to reasons (long email giving me life story and throat cancer (!)) they were not able to pick it up and they would have to send their 'agent' around.
They asked for our paypal address.
I contacted paypal asking if there was any worries giving it to them to which they replied there wasn't anything wrong but beware of the following; any correspondence from paypal would be address to the paypal account name i.e. Dear john.smith@hotmail.com and that scammers quite often used other banks like western union to lull people into.
Long story short, sure enough we received an email from the scammers stating they have had to pay £350 into our paypal account (the item was only up for £120) to cover their agents fees and western unions handling charges. There was a link to click on (obviously we didnt). Shortly after we received an email from paypal stating we have received a payment and we were to click on the link to approve payment. Sure enough this email was NOT addressed to our paypal account name.
If you receive anything paypal dodgy related send it to spoof@paypal.com for them to deal with.
We sent all of our emails and we had one back from them stating that they were dealing with it.0
