Tap only turns a quarter?

So I bought some new taps from eBay.
However, they only turn a quarter of the way round when opening or closing. Are they just ultra modern or is there a screw I need to adjust?

Thanks

Quarter turn taps are very common these days, yes.
  • It is to do with the type of washer. Rubber washers result in multi turn, ceramic washers are quarter turn.
  • We have these in our "modern" kitchen. The "older" utility room has the old fashioned multiturn.

They are sometimes called hospital taps and they have extenders on so that doctors and nurses turn them off using their elbows. The hardest thing abut them (if you buy and fit a matched pair) is getting used to the fact that one of them usually the one on the left is counterintuitive, i.e it is clockwise to open.

    Yeah!

I got mine from here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321966790684?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=510903630144&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Fitted them both and they're strange but I do quite like it. Shame though as all the other taps in the house (even the new mixer tap in the downstairs bathroom!) now seem old fashioned.

A tip for years down the line. Keep ALL the information that comes with the taps so you know how to take them apart, how to remove the cartridge and what size and/or part number it is. If you move house, leave this with the new owner. We had to replace cartridges in son's house and it took ages working out how the taps came apart and which cartridge was required.

Hardly "modern" we've had them for 40 years. They have never needed a replacement cartridge, either.

Yeah I bet you had the internet 40 years ago as well!

If these taps ever do need a new cartridge it's often difficult to get replacement discs and it is usually cheaper and less hassle to just buy a new tap.

Still, think how much you're saving on tap-washers!

Yup. Make sure you keep all the details. You can replace the washers on the old style taps but you cannot replace the ceramic washers meaning a new tap insert. Not particularly difficult to fix but difficult to get a perfect match on some taps!

Sadly the hot tap one doesn't actually produce enough flow to get the boiler to kick in for ours.
