Anyone from Tonbridge?

Hi all,
We plan to move to Tonbridge in the next few months. I'm trying to narrow down on areas for buying.

Can anyone local please help?

How is the area near the Golf Centre like? Is it safe and nice?
Particularly Garden road, Kendal drive, mill lane area (considering these areas as they are in catchment for a good primary school)

We are also considering Tunbridgewells area. We saw a very nice house there last weekend - but it was a narrow close. Would you buy a house on a narrow road?

I often see questions like yours on Streetlife (https://www.streetlife.com/area/tonbridge/) of the actual location so locals, real locals can sort of provide feedback. In my areas often folks are even kind enuff to meet up and show around!

  • Tunbridge Wells is lovely, but an absolute traffic NIGHTMARE twice a day. Good value for money in the SE though.

Tunbridge wells is a bit more expensive than Tonbridge - isn't it?

We are looking at Tonbridge as travel to London is quicker.

  • Yes it is a little more expensive, personally i think that is reflected in the quality of shops and restaurants available in TW. However you save 15 mins on the train to London from Tonbridge....
  • Hi If you fancy the more village type life I know Marden VERY well. Family have lived there for years.

It is easy to get the train, beautiful part of the world and i believe slightly cheaper? Don't know Paddock Wood as well, but go there fore Waitrose etc

  • Southborough is nice and inbetween the two. The shopping in Tunbridge Well is far superior to Tonbridge. Also have a look at Bidborough Ridge if you are feeling rich.

I'm tempted by the nicer villages around. But looks like we have to stick to Tonbridge. DH commutes to London for work and under 40 min commute is a no-compromise thingy for him now - so we have to find somewhere closer to Tonbridge station

How about Hildenborough? There are VERY few properties for sale there at the moment (I'm wondering why?)

Long shot - but does anyone here know what are the chances of getting a in-year admission into Slade primary if we find a place under 0.5 miles from it?

    Hi OP,

I like Tonbridge - much more relaxed a vibe than TW and Sevenoaks but Tonbridge's surrounding areas are more aesthetically pleasing shall we say than the central belt around the town. I was going to suggest Hildenborough so pleased to read that its already on your radar. You can find some lovely Art Deco gems if you have a keen eye for the style. How about Shipbourne also and Penshurst? Beautiful villages and you get a little bit more for your budget with country aspects to boot.

If west Kent is the lure and commute is the dealbreaker, have you considered the villages of Sevenoaks? Or the town itself if within budget. I prefer village living and there are so many pretty areas near train stations within the Sevenoaks district that can get you into London around the 40mins mark. Seal, Kemsing, Otford, Riverhead would all be great with young kids and as they get older you are well placed for the Tonbridge grammars.

I do the commute into London and whilst TW is nice, too far out for me personally and yes, the traffic in/out can be frustrating.
