I am learning French from their app and am also using other resources too. I love it. I honestly have learned more from the app than I have from three years of classes at school!
  • Thank you for this! I have been meaning to start learning German (daughter is showing every sign of settling there) - I have just signed up to Duolingo and had my first lesson. :D Now all I have to do is keep giong!

A friend recommended duolingo to me a few months back. She was learning Spanish but I'm revising my schoolgirl French (50 years since I started that at secondary school!) we've had a few trips to France and I know a bit,but its surprising how it comes back- I think the apps are great. You can do a few minutes every day.Wouldnt mind trying a different language, but what to choose :)

Launched mid-2012. Its not exactly "Old Style"
  • This is one of my favourite apps/websites ever! I love how good you feel as you progress, and the range of languages is great. It still surprises me that it's free, too. A great way to kill a bit of time, learn something new, or refresh what you already know.

Yes I am doing spanish with it. It's very good.
If you are puzzled by an answer, you can click the icon at the bottom and read what people have said to explain why an answer is a certain way.

There is also memrise on computer which is also free and has various languages (they do an app but I like the website better as there is more choice).
  • I've attempted German and Spanish on it...Good to get a small grasp of language before a holiday but I never have the attention span to keep up with it more than a couple of months at a time :rotfl:

  • I tried Duolingo when I heard about it....and chose German ...a language I speak somewhat fluently!

I would actually warn people against using it as the sole method of learning a language.

There was little/no help in learning the grammar - there was the chance to pose questions and have other students answer them - but I soon learned that you cannot rely on this...Far too often I had to correct mistakes from people giving totally wrong answers!

I do admit that it was fun - in short periods. And if I was teaching the language at school/college I would possibly look at using some of the site as 'fun' homework (After I had checked THOROUGHLY for mistakes!)

But recommend as a method of learning a language? Absolutely not.
