Getting rid of the smell of cigarettes!

We've just bought a second hand oak table and leather chairs. Was advertised by someone we know on behalf of her mum so thought it would be ok. Got it home and set it up and it smells of stale smoke. It's that bad we've dismantled it and bought our old table and chairs from the garage and put the wooden one there for an airing. Is there anything we can do to get rid of the smell?

Mix a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and a few drops of lime essential oil....or lemon or orange (lime seems to work better).
Dab a cloth into the mix and apply to the table and chairs. Buff up with a clean cloth. They'll all smell lovely soon! Apply every couple of days or so...until you're happy! x0 -
I gave up smoking a couple of years ago and its only in the last few months that I realsie how all pervading the smell of cigarette smoke is.
Of course i knew about clothes, hair etc but didnt realise that it will pervade wood and leather etc.
Its one of the reasons I stay a non smoker, as well as the fact that I dont want a second heart attack.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Yes, I bought a 2nd hand hardwood sideboard a few years ago that really stank when we brought it into our house. I scrubbed it down with hot water, washing up liquid and bleach. Then, we painted it and when the paint dried it was neutralised!0

you may have luck with the table but with regards to the chairs its almost impossible to get rid of. i know this from personal experience as i bought a leather sofa set second hand, only when we got it home we noticed the smell. I tried everything, neat disinfectant, odour neutralising sprays, leather cleaners, steaming, white vinegar. Nothing got it out, despite me dismantling half the sofa and the whole house stank like an old pub . If its a real leather sofa like ours was its essentially a skin so is very difficult to remove the smell, not to mention trying to get at the foam/upholstery underneath which will most likely be covered in the smell aswell, save yourself the bother/stress and ditch itEven a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.0

We had the same experience as wrightk. No amount of wiping down with vinegar, standing out in the sunshine, sprinkling with bicarb or febreze-ing reduced the stink of tobacco in an otherwise lovely solid teak storage unit.
In the end, hubby varnished the whole thing which rather spoilt the look of it but at least meant we could use it and not chuck it into landfill.
People who smoke like troopers indoors and decline to ventilate their homes ought to be banned from advertising their stuff for sale!0
