Different chimney cowl needed?

Hope someone can help with this - sorry about the long explanation which starts my post (but you'll see why!)

My elderly aunt, who lives in a bungalow, had some dampproofing work done to the chimney breast and adjacent walls 2 years ago and the last time we visited her, I noticed that the cowl on her chimney was one suitable for a gas fire (i.e. lets more fumes out but also lets more air/rain in) and not the electric fire she has now. (Apparently the guys who did the damp proofing recommended she get one and she had a gas fire at the time - she's now got an electric one and with no plans to go back to gas). She is always fretting about the damp coming back and will probably be selling the bungalow in less than 5 years time to move into care (so she doesn't want this to be an issue when she does so).

So, my question is - would it be worth swopping her current cowl for one suitable for an electric fire (they seem to be more solid and let in less wind/rain in?) I'm not sure how much difference it would make?

Anyone know?? Thanks.
