Healthy cheap snacks

Oh yes, freshly made popcorn! If you want a topping, drizzle melted butter and a little syrup over, or some curry powder. So cheap.
I must admit that I love fruit as a snack but only if it peeled and sliced (well obv not berry fruit!).
Toast crusts to make bread sticks for hummus (hummus is so cheap to make a large batch from scratch).
If you want cake occasionally, cook it in a loaf tin so you can slice it fairly thinly. It goes a lot further than a round cake and of course each portion is fewer calories
Microwave some 'raw' popadums but break them up a bit before cooking, again, they go further that
way!
Slices of malt loaf toasted, no need for butter, are filling and good for those with a sweet tooth.
Slices of cheese with crispy apple slices, cut both components quite thinly.
Hmmm, now I want a snack! *mutters* I am on a low carb diet, snack equals cheese, nuts or dark chocolate squaresI have changed my work-life balance to a life-work balance.0 -
Keeping a chopped up fruit salad in a lock and lock tub in the fridge means that we can all grab an easy snack.
My daughter loves crumpets with peanut butter and jam.
I love apple slices with peanut butter (might have this now, actually...)
We both love pickled silverskin onions with cheese (I have a low fat babybel, but obviously cheese cubes can be used!). She will even just sit and eat a jar of gherkins if she was given the chance!
Veggie sticks with garlic and herb philadelphia.
I helped her make some wraps and she was able to put together a quick snack of a warmed wrap with the aforementioned philadelphia and sliced cucumber.
Also have to vouch for twinks!0 -
If you can stretch the pennies to add some dried fruit or choc chips to the flapjack / twinks recipe, they feel very luxurious and are more nutritious. One of my tricks was also to melt a very little chocolate and drizzle it on the top - cost was minimal but kids saw 'chocolate'!
Home made hummus is also nutritious & filling, with the raw veg mentioned above.
I also put stale ends of bread (or even a sliced loaf if on offer) into the freezer so I can always do toast - which goes very well with hummus, is of course nice with jam, and for a treat: cinnamon toast costs very little.0 -
Save all your loaf crusts in the freezer until you have enough to make it worth using the oven.
Then cut them into small cubes, mix well with a little olive or vegetable oil and chopped garlic to make garlic croutons. Bake in hot oven for about 10 mins or until turning crispy.0
