  • Will be interested to hear from anyone about how long this normally takes. I got this message when applying on the 22nd so hoping to hear by the end of the week:

"Thank you for your application for an HSBC Advance Bank Account.

We have received your completed application successfully. However, we need to review it further. We will contact you using the contact details you provided in this application, within the next 5 working days.

Thank you again for choosing HSBC."

My partner applied online for an Advance account 11 days ago. At the end of the process there was nothing about having to review it further. It said congratulations the application was successful (I think) and gave her an application reference number. Since then there's be 1 letter from them which just says "here's the information you requested" and has some info about the £200 switch offer (which we knew about already). She doesn't have her sort code or account number yet. Nor the debit card.

I had a similarly long and drawn out experience with them last year when I applied for an Advance account:

10/09/15 Applied. They said they'd get back within 7 days,
24/09/15 Called them as heard nothing. They said they had issues/backlogs.
30/09/15 Account details arrived in post. I return signature and agreement forms.
07/10/15 Can't access account. No debit card yet. Send email to complain.
08/10/15 Spoke to them on phone. They apologised. Said debit card and PIN on way.
    12/10/15 Receive debit card.
    15/10/15 Receive PIN.
17/10/15 Receive account welcome pack with account switching info. Call them and wait 35 minutes to be transferred to switching team. Give up.
19/10/15 Called switching team again and successfully initiate switch from donor bank a/c.
22/10/15 Receive a security number that finally enables me to access online banking, but I need a security token to do some stuff which I still haven't got.
30/10/15 Receive security token and activate it.

They'll usually verify ID etc online instantly. If they can't they'll go to a manual process and may ask for you to send documents.

Why not ring and ask where your application process has got to? It's hard for us to know!

  • Not sure what happened with my original application but they had no record of it when I phoned and went into branch. Ended up applying again this year and has been a bit better. Still waiting for my secure key activation to set up online payments though. They don't seem to do anything in a hurry!
