I would like to remove the above from my laptop and install the free version of Avast, is this a wise thing to do and if so how do I go about it, do I download Avast first and save it on my laptop ready to install after I have hopefully removed live safe, and how do I remove live safe compleatly, is it best to disconnect from the internet when doing all this. Thankyou.

If in doubt, disconnect from the Internet while you don't have any AV software installed.
However ... depending on which version of Windows you have ... when you uninstall/remove McAfee then Windows Defender will likely reactivate itself before Avast/whatever is installed, so you should still be generally protected anyway. As long as you don't go surfing or try to download anything while you're making the change then it's unlikely that you'd encounter any nasties.0
