Removing varnish/colour from interior stone wall

We have an exposed stone wall in our living room. The house dates from the 1800s and we like the wall as a feature, however at some point in the past a previous owner has painted it with some sort of dark varnish.
Is there a recommended way to clean it up and restore the stonework? Can post pics if that's helpful.

a quick consultation with Dr Google suggests that there are plenty of products.
This one was top of the list.

Thanks, I had a quick google and many things seemed like pretty hardcore acid, not ideal sounding for indoor use0
