Passport --- new or renewal

An 18 your old who's "childrens" passport is about to expire in the next 6 months. The passport is a biometric one in their own name. Will they be applying for a "renewal" for their first 10 year one (and therefore Ok to do online) or will this count as a "new" passport application, with all the associated rules.

My daughter renewed her last 'child's' passport last year when she was 19 and received her first 10 year adult passport. Definitely a renewal.

Also, her boyfriend renewed his 3 years ago, when he was 22, and his previous 'child's' passport had expired a couple of years earlier. This was also a renewal.
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

  • It can only be a renewal if there has already been a passport issued

Renewal. Son turned 18 in Sep, renewed his passport online early Oct. Straightforward apart from him significantly too close to the edge of the box and them requesting he signed again. So took slightly longer.
