Ideas please for wood paint/treatment

I'm busy with a project to make a TARDIS cupboard, take a look:

But I'm not very happy with the stain. I've used this stuff, which looked pretty good when I tested, but has actually ended up being too pale and also leaving residue behind when you touch it.
So I'm wondering if anyone can suggest things I could try instead. I'd like to keep the wood pattern visible, really; get a nice deep blue; a finish which won't transfer when you touch it; and some shine would probably be nice too.
I'm thinking maybe a pretty clear varnish would do the job nicely, and deepen the colour some; but will that work OK over the top of the staining I've done already? Alternatively what kinds of paint could keep the wood grain visible?

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I have 2 tins of Cuprinol pacific blue woodstain but it looks like that is discontinued.
Opaque is the key word for searches.0 -
Opaque what? And opaque wouldn't show the wood grain, would it?Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0

OK, I'll see what I can find. Amazon doesn't come up with much. Failing that, the dye I have says it can be used to colour water borne varnishes, so maybe that could work...Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0

Try colourwashing the wood with diluted paint (you get the colour but still see the grain of the wood) and then varnishing over the top. I do this on my floors.0

According to that sheet, the opaque stains are for covering up imperfections. I like the Sapphire listed there, though.Try colourwashing the wood with diluted paint (you get the colour but still see the grain of the wood) and then varnishing over the top. I do this on my floors.
Diluted with what, water? I've got some clear varnish to see how it looks over the existing stain. Clear varnish with some of my existing dye in looks perfect!Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0
