car insurance claim confusion

I was involved in an accident last week. My husband was driving and a vehicle travelling on other side of road suddenly appeared and hit us head on. We only have vague recollections of what happened after wards and were taken by ambulance to hospital.
Fortunately another driver stopped and called for police/ambulance and waited until they arrived.
We contacted our insurers but had very little information to give them. They asked for the police incident number and now would like us to get the registration of the vehicle that stopped to help! If we don't we have been told it will delay our claim for 8 weeks. Will the police be able to give it to us or is that breaking a data protection law?

They might help, though unlikely.
But ask your insurer the reason for this 8 week delay - assuming you have comprehensive cover, then a delay in getting the good Samaritan's details should not prevent your claim being dealt with immediately.
Maybe try and escalate this at the insurer by speaking to a claims manager, or going down their complaints route if you aren't happy with their reason for acting like this0 -
Thanks for replying.
Just had an email from insurer. Apparently it will take up to 8 weeks for them to receive police report but they will be unable to begin liability discussions until it has been received.0 -
But no reason given why they cannot get on now with repairs??
They should get your car fixed now and sort out liability later! (Assuming you have comprehensive cover)0
