    They're great for the company selling them :)

    You miss out on dividends and are paying for the notion of security. Far better to make your own by using an index tracker and holding a portion of cash - you can then benefit from all dividends and any growth but with the same downside protection.
    Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
