Sounds like that's a 2-step solution to the problem. I'd probably quickstep away from that garage, sounds like a rum backstreet place.

Google Astra pedal test which will instruct you on how to self read the codes from a flashing light on the dash.
However I will predict the result will be a missfire on one of the cylinders.
As already suggested this engine is known for fouling plugs in later life. Used to help a friend who had one and ended up cleaning the plugs every 6-8 weeks. Other than that and the battery dying of old age it was a very reliable car for her.0
