Solicitor out of office until after completion!!

Please excuse my stupidity, I am buying my first house!

I am due to complete on the 28th but I found out today my solicitor is out of the office until the 31st. Will I still complete on the 28th? I'm panicking now that I'll have to wait until after the 31st which is going to be a total nightmare as I've already got a snagging survey, new furniture deliveries and removal van booked.

Please tell me it'll still go ahead if she's not actually in the office!

Someone would need to be in the office to deal with it

It's over 40 years ago, but I do remember being disappointed that our completion was done by a girl in her teens; no solicitor in sight.

It has probably all been sorted already and someone will just call you on the 28th! I complete on the 28th, I've already paid, I know the mortgage funds are already requested, etc. What I don't know is if my solicitor is in or not, but I always imagine someone else would just send the money and call you. Don't worry. I'm assuming you've had your 10 day notice from the builder?
  • Thanks for the replies. I feel sick lol

I've had notice from the builder and notice from the solicitor to confirm the 28th for completion. That was only last week so I assume she knew then that she would be out the office (presumably taking holiday) and would have said if that would affect completion on the 28th? I've paid the final balance to the solicitors today (when I emailed her to inform her of this I got the out of office reply). This reply gave her assistants email address so I've emailed her to ask but obviously she won't reply until tomorrow. The mortgage funds have been in place for about 3 months. So there's no reason it shouldn't go ahead but I've never done this before so I don't know how it works?

Whilst on the subject does anyone know when my first mortgage payment should be?

Your solicitor and staff have done many completions. They know what they are doing and will have it covered. Save your worry for the things you need to do, packing, removals etc.

I assume you have exchanged? If so, then it will happen on the 28th (and if it doesn't, there are all sorts of problems!)

Once exchange has been done, it's basically there....
  • It's a new build so I exchanged in July.

    Then you will be fine...

Good luck, moving is stressful, and it's natural to worry!

It's a bit different with a new build. You don't have a completion date when you exchange.

Don't worry, all will be in place if you've had notice. Looks like we are moving on the same day!
