VAT Registration after Quote

Hope someone can advise.
I accepted a quote in March 2016 from a joiner for a new gate to be made, who was not VAT registered at the time. The work was supposed to have been done in August. There have been numerous delays and excuses. I finally received yet another promise that the work would be started nest week ie end of October, but am advised that he is now VAT registered and therefore the original quote would now need to have several hundred pounds added to it. I suppose I can simply walk away and find someone else to do the job after a very long wait.

Is my only other recourse to try to negotiate with him to reduce the price to accommodate the extra VAT?

The delays were his problem and not yours. Tell him straight, he gets the job if he sticks to his quote. If he won't then find someone else to do the job.If he has any scrupples he would honour the quote to include vat after all the delays/excuses.

Regards Leveller 2911 (vat registered Joiner) :D EDIT: I'm not looking for work btw , booked up till next Feb and as I said ,I'm vat registered.
  • Well he has to charge you VAT, it's up to him if he wants to honour the original quote and reduce his price accordingly but he doesn't have to. Equally if the job hasn't begun you are welcome to take the business elsewhere.

If it were me, I'd honour the original quote unless my margins were so small that to do so would leave me out of pocket. Especially given that the delays were his fault.

But yes, your only recourse is negotiate or walk away.

Yes, he will have to pay the VAT, so it's up to you to negotiate the final price, the VAT is his problem.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

Why did you wait from march to august for the work in the first place?

No advice needed here. Hire him at 20% more than you expected, or get other folk to quotr and do it. Up to you.

Bare in mind it shouldn't be 20% more. He can now claim back the VAT on expenses, which he wouldn't have been able to do before.

For example, if materials are half the cost, it should only really go up around 10%.

Find someone else there’s no incentive for them to drop, loose, take the hit of several hundred pounds (that seams a lot of VAT for timber Gate????) if they do chances are bodge to compensate the loss, Plenty of good joiner, chippies etc out the who are not vat reg or want to be to waste time arguing about it...

I didn't wait. When I accepted the quote, I was told he couldn't do the work until August.

Yes, I'm assuming that there must be some leeway given that he will be saving money from being VAT registered.
