Moving from BT to Virgin

Have been offered a good deal to move home phone to Virgin from BT (free line rental for 12 months). Was just wondering:
1. will I be able to keep my current telephone number, what do I need to do to ensure this?
2. I currently use BT8500 phones that have a callguard, these have been brilliant at stopping nuisance calls, will they work the same when on Virgin? Im sure they will but thought I would check.
