No Fly holiday in the Sun recommendations

Thinking about next years holiday and would love about 10 days in the sun, probably June or September, only problem is I don't want to fly (fear of flying). We don't really want to go on a touring holiday by coach or train as we prefer to do what we want when we want. Also we are not keen on driving abroad so I'm aware this limits our options. That said, has anyone any recommendations on hotels/self catering places that are reasonably easy to get to without flying/driving. An all inclusive would be great but guess they will be hard to come by on this type of hols. Appreciate we may need a stopover or two but that could be nice to see different places on way to destination.

My parents did an Italian holiday by train. Most of Europe is very well served by rail. I'd think somewhere like Spain (perhaps the resorts near Barcelona) would be a possibility. All inclusive would definitely be an option in that area. You might need to book the train tickets and hotel separately but that's no big deal nowadays.

Why not cruise to Spain, on a luxury ferry that has more in common with a cruise liner than old-fashioned Channel ferries? Brittany Ferries operates three direct ferry routes from the UK to Spain http://www.seat61.com/ferry-to-spain.htm

Straight out of a brochure no doubt :)
TBH - it's a ferry and not really much like a cruise liner, it's comfortable enough though and well worth considering.
Brittany Ferries will start doing Ferry + Accommodation deals soon.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

See if they're on booking.com or tripadvisor.

+1 for the ferry plus look at the government run hotels in old forts etc. they are called Paradores.
PM me if you want a discount on Brittany Ferries if you decide to use them.

Paradores tend to be fairly remote. Is it just the long drive you want to avoid OP or would hiring a car to get around once there be an option?

I'm not really sure what kind of holiday you want, you mention all inclusive but then in the next bit say you want to do your own thing. The two don't really match up.

Actually I think cruising would suit you, all food included, relaxing at sea but things to go see in port. My Mum hated flying so we'd cruise out of Southampton . There's quite a lot of early booking cruise deals around at the moment , seems to be with cruises it's a book really early or really late to get the offers.

I don't know what the problem is with using the trains...

You can get to virtually anywhere in Europe by train, and the whole process is quick and efficient (apart from the need, in many cases, to get from one station to another in Paris). The extremely comfortable train-hotels will give you a good meal and a good night's sleep while taking you from Paris to the resort areas of Spain and Italy, just a taxi-ride from your hotel.

I'd go by train to Arcachon or somewhere between Nimes and Salou.
