Me, I'd be heading directly to Trading Standards. And perhaps Not copying the store in. Their website is here - best of luck!

All the best to you both!

I received a certificate in the post on Monday. It seems to be the certificate for one of the stones in the ring instead of for the whole thing, an 18ct white gold trilogy ring. I know it's wrong because we wanted to make a change to the ring and were told the certificate already had all the info on it so it couldn't be changed.

Also, the certificate does not exist according to the certifier's website. So even if it was for one of my stones, it's completely useless.

    Who is the certifier?

What did they originally tell you about the stones in the ring? Did they give you the details about each of the stones? Is it one large and 2 significantly smaller ones as it's possible that only the larger one is certified?

I have a 3 stone engagement ring and I have 3 separate GIA certificates - one for each stone.

    This all sounds very odd!
  • Lilelvis: They gave details of the whole thing, ring and stones. It is is 1 large and 2 small but we were told they were all certified stones.
It's a WGI certificate. We thought it was a GIA because that's what they were telling us about in the shop.

Digforvictory: I filled in the trading standards online form earlier today so hopefully that helps.

I agree with fleshandbone completely. They are messing you around. I think this level of customer service is unacceptable for such a large purchase.

If you were promised a certificate, you should get a certificate.

There is no better way of making a shop like this get their act together than a court claim form landing on their doormat.

It is very easy to do. First you send them a 'letter before action' stating what was agreed (i.e. what sort of certificate they said they would provide), what they need to do (i.e. provide the certificate) and state that you will be rejecting the ring and issuing a county court claim against them if they fail to provide the certificate or contact you to reach an acceptable resolution within 14 days.

If you do not get an acceptable response to your letter, use the moneyclaimonline system to file a claim against them for breach of contract.

You can go to trading standards if you want but quite frankly it is a waste of time in 99% of cases. Trading standards are completely underresourced and they do not investigate individual consumer complaints. If you want the shop to pull their finger out, a county court claim is the way to do it.
  • Hiya hi Just wanted to update you all at last
I did all the paperwork to take them to court and am happy to say that about 5 days before the court date they agreed to give our money back.
Thank you guys so much for your advice, it was/is greatly appreciated and has helped a lot.
    xx
  • Very well done, that's fantastic news :j

Another story demonstrating how most companies settle when they realise that their bluff has been called and that they are about to be held to account.

Congratulations on going ahead and resolving this. This could have easily turned into one of the many threads where people spend years complaining about how unfairly they have been treated, yet never actually resolve the matter because they don't issue court proceedings.

Did they also refund your court claim fees? (You'll have had at least a claim fee if not a hearing fee).
