EDF stopping switch advice please

Hi everyone,

We moved into a new property on 30th sept/1st october.

It's on a prepayment meter with EDF, we've decided we want to switch to British gas, decent tariff and then once we switch we'll change onto a credit meter and pick the money saving expert tariff suggested (no charge to change the meter from BG unlike others who charge)

so we rang BG and initiated the switch, fast forward a week or so and we've had a letter saying your current supplier have stopped the switch.

Ive spoken to my lettings agent (martin and co) who tell me that they informed EDF of the change in tenants from the 1st on the 4th oct along with the council tax and the water people.

There's a debt on the prepayment meter to the tune of £1146 so it keeps eating our credit to pay against the debt, next up is a phone call to EDF to ask them what the heck they are playing at.

Would I be abel to ask for the credit on the meter of anything they've debited for the debt since the 1st oct?

any advice etc?

Yes you will but you need to speak to EDF and get a new key and account. You should not have used the key left at the property as you are topping up against the previous tenant's account. Have you still got the receipts for the payments you have made, it helps when reclaiming.

It was your responsibility to contact EDF on the day you moved in - NEVER trust a letting agent / landlord to do anything that is your responsibility to ensure is done correctly. Are the council tax and water sorted correctly yet ?

Yes Molerat the council tax and water have been sorted, we rang them to check and were told we were already on the bills etc.

I realise now we were naive but the agents just gave us the key and said to carry on using it, if we had thought about it more logically it wouldn't have made sense but we thought it would be changed behind the scenes (which is what is actually going to happen).

I suspect the lettings agent just didnt know what she was doing, as I even went in there and asked about the debt on the meter and she said well we'll refund you back enough to cover it (at the time we thought it was £11.46 not £1146) but I should have questioned then why there was a debt at all, I didn't realise they could wipe it in a remote way the same way as they load it.

    Lessons definitely learnt!
