Right paint?

I have a custom made pine bookcase in need of a fresh coat of paint. I think the existing paint is gloss but it's so old that there isn't much of a shine to it. One end is unpainted as it used to abut a wall.

I'd like to paint it the same colour as the wall but that colour only comes in emulsion. Can emulsion be used on wood? If so will it stand up to use? Some at least of the books are in constant use.

You can have just about any color made up.

There are some very tough emulsions check the range of the wall manufacurer.

A thin glass(made to measure) on the shelf would reduce the wear where the heavily used books are and not look too unsightly.

You could use the emulsion, and then coat with a hard varnish. Not as strong as the glass, and not as tidy as having the paint mixed to colour.

If you know what the emulsion was, there may be a matching gloss available. Otherwise, a colourmatch (Dulux-style) will cover pretty much anything you want, both in spectrum of colours, and what you'll be able to paint.

Ta. No there isn't a matching gloss and I'm not too sure about using glass - the bookcase is enormous. Varnish has possibilities, hadn't thought of that. Maybe I should explore a dulux mix first.
