I got into debt with SP after having a prepaymeter meter fitted, They were supposed to close the dual account and open Two new ones for the Gas and Leccy meter. This they managed(well 2 out of 3 ain't bad), But it took 18 months before I got a red letter informing me I owe £712, I am paying off a debt on both bloody meters and neither amount to that much.
FF Two years later and despite being told over and over that it has been sorted I now owe £988.

Economy Energy rang me (I wrongly presumed they were a comparison site as that is what they wanted me to think). 14 days later I log into SP website to be met with 'sorry you;re leaving us'...I rang them to be told I had handed my account over to EE I insisted they begin an erroneous transfer. I was told not to worry as the debts were too high for any transfer to take place so SP would simply refuse.

EE objected..EE objected 5 times (they are only allowed to object 3). SP messed up and gave them the account anyway.

EE told me the day I found out the transfer had gone ahead, that they would not object again, SP made another attempt the same day..Guess what EE objected.

The next day I get a letter from EE apologising that SP had refused to take the account back!!! THEY LIED IN PRINT

Since then I know have 4 letters claiming SP refused to take the account back, SP are adamant they want it back so I can pay off the debt through the meter!

Today I got a really snotty email from complaints at EE, It is my fault that I got switched, SP never mentioned the debt (they bloody did) and once again if I want to change supplier I can.

Trouble is I've got OFGEM involved and they think SP should write off the debt...So do I go back if thats the case, as OVO looks quite good!

Can I Ask for a 'gesture of goodwill' from both companies?? How much would be appropriate? This has cost me a bloody fortune in letters and phone calls#

Any advice/answers to my MANY questions would be appreciated...

  • Hi
Can you tell my how you managed to achieve getting OFGEM involved as normally you would have to go through the Ombudsman?

I suggest you follw the suppliers complaint procedure (if you havce not done so by now)

8 weeks thereafter, if you do not have a an acceptabvle resolution, you can escalate the matter to the ombudsman service.

The ombudsman service will not only ask you what your complaint is about, but also ask what you would ideally like by way of resolution.

Yes you can ask for a goodwill gesture, and you can also ask for quatifiable losses on top (e.g. phone call charges amd postage)

You have to lay all this out in an ombudsman complaint form, and sign it (or verbally agree to it) - this then goes to the supplier for their response to the ombudsman, before the ombudsman then makes up their own mind as to a proposed resolution.
  • Thats what I meant. Sorry I was in rant mode
  • We've done all that (EE refuse to acknowledge a complaint so the process has halted from their end) SP have been quite helpful apparently as they recognise its EE causing the trouble.

Because of EE it seems nothing can happen, They're just getting away with it, this began in Feb and SP have produced a further SEVEN requests to take over the account, Three is the limit.

I've been looking at OVO recently, may give them a go....If EE let me leave
  • I have to say I've read horror stories about Ombudsman, they've been brilliant in this, They are clearly as frustrated as I am. Expect yet more sanctions to be placed on EE
  • If you have been trough the Ombudsman process, I would ask the Ombudsman for all the evidence they have been sent by the energy supplier you have complained about. They should then send you a script of what the supplier has stated regarding your case. This should be provided free of charge (unlike SAR) If you read the Ombudsman's small print they are obliged to sent this evidence should either side request it. This may help you to make the decision on how to proceed,
