Do we have any YouTube content creators?

Options
Hi all, just though I would ask if we have any youtubers here? I have not seen many threads about it but plenty about blogging.
I have been making videos on YouTube for about 18 months now and I'm slowly growing which is great to see. I just film myself participating in my favourite hobby and edit into a video and upload. Tax to pay on any revenue but still totally worth it.
I think it a great income booster if you find a niche that is not to saturated!
So does anyone else here do it?

  • Is that a no lol?
  • There are people who make money on YouTube, I know one member who makes a pretty decent income from it. I'm sure they'll come along soon.

I make a few quid a year but I'm sporadic in my content, something I plan to change in the new year. Mostly planning product reviews and maybe unboxing videos for subscription boxes - I'm not sure yet.

Have dabbled in the past, as a side channel to my main blog, both in the Motorcycling niche. However I've been rather sporadic over the last year or so and have just been concentrating on the main blog itself lately. TBH I never really pushed it enough to get a big following or large number of views.

To be honest I did lose interest for a while around May this year and lost a little bit of momentum but I'm hoping to gain the ground back after upping my production skills (I think). My main aim apart from enjoying it as a hobby is to make enough each month to pay for my mortgage.

When you say nice little earner how muc are you talking?

Trying to get income levels for views/subscribers about y/t seems some kind of great grandmas secret recipe.

Understand you film your hobby but how much do you generate and how long do you spend editing and producing?

Hi, my hobby is metal detecting and treasure hunting in general so I will usually spend 4 or 5 hours doing it which I would be doing anyway if I was not making a video, i just record what I'm doing and finding. The editing generally takes an hour or two depending on how much film I have recorded and then it is just a case of uploading and tagging the video and description correctly.

In terms of earnings it is against terms of service to give exact figures but I can give you a ball park figure of £70-100 a month with my current views which range from 30-80k a month. It is growing though every month the more videos I put out there.
I have three friends who also make videos in the same hobby, they are better established than me and all three earn £40,000+ a year from Adsense revenue.
If you are willing to put the effort in and can come back from the constant kicks in the face that YouTube deal out to creators it is a very rewarding was to booost your income :)

Posting regularly does seem to be one of the really important things on YouTube. I have heard a lot of people on there say you really need to post once a week to make money. My friend has a popular channel and she said if she starts to post less than once a fortnight people start unsubscribing. She said she really notices the difference in her stats.

Yep I have noticed the exact same thing on my channel. Also deviating away from your chosen niche can lose you a lot of subscribers. I was in Florida on holiday when hurricane matthew struck so decided to document it on YouTube. I lost around 50 of my subscribers that only wanted metal detecting videos but fortunately I gained 120 new ones from the hurricane videos and also accumulated well over 100k views on the hurricane videos. I also uploaded a video of my dog doing cute things which lost me over 20 subscribers! They are quite a fickle bunch really
  • Hi.

I only started Youtube a few months ago and have been uploading regular. My views are low right now, but I know it takes time to grow. I enjoy creating the videos so will keep uploading and see what happens lol.

Do any of you advertise your channels/videos or have people just stumbled across them and your views and subscribers have grown from that?

When I first started I promoted it on relevant forums and Reddit in the least spammy ways I could. I still do promote some of the videos but once the ball starts rolling views come in naturally.
