Wall hung toilet movement

We have a wall hung toilet in our shower room which was fitted over a year ago when we refurbished the shower room.

It's hung off a Grohe frame enclosed in a stud frame and I've no reason to believe it wasn't fixed and secured properly - it's been rock solid for well over a year. However in the last few weeks I've noticed a very slight amount of movement in the pan when I sit on it. It feels like it shifts down just a mm or two. I can physically move the pan up and down a very small amount.

I'm hoping that all that has happened is that the bolts securing the pan to the frame have worked ever so slightly loose and just need tightening up - is this likely to be the case? If so, how easy is it to rectify? I'm not really sure how to access the bolts to tighten them.

The fixings will either be 19mm nuts where there are cut outs at the side of the pan, or by a 8mm Allen key on the underside, sometimes a 17/19mm socket head

The concealed fixings on the underside often use metal grub screws in a plastic part. It's a receipt for disaster as you over tighten it strips the thread, you under tighten and your pan starts to rock over time !

  • Thanks. I had a proper look and there were holes on each side of the pan with plastic covers. Inside was an adjustment that took a number 6 allen key. I used a hex bit in my screwdriver and there was definitely a few turns to tighten them up. I did them up hand right as much as I could - could probably get more torque if I used an actual Allen key but I was worried about overtightening and cracking the tiles.

I think what was happening was after sitting on it it was dropping a mm or so and then gradually springing back as if you stood up and sat back down again straight away it didn't move.

Is tightening these up say once a year to be expected as normal maintenance?

We have Grohe wall hung which is approaching 12 years old. Apart from a washer on the flush it hasn't needed anything and I could hang a football team off the loo if needed.

Hmm, well maybe it wasn't done up quite tightly enough in the first place. Touch wood the problem is solved.
