eBay selling - proof of delivery - retain?

I've been selling some items on ebay over the past 12 months.

I'm having a clear out of paperwork. What do I need to keep as proof of delivery and for how long?

I want to shred all the newsagent receipts for Hermes parcels showing up as delivered on my Hermes account. The account reference should be proof enough.

What about Royal Mail standard post. I just get a proof of posting for low value items. How long should I keep these? Shred after buyer leaves feedback?

Paypal will allow a dispute to be opened 180 days (6 months) from purchase. The POP won't help you with an INR or SNAD. BUT, a chargeback can be opened up to 6 years later - more if the buyer can evidence fraud - AND a POP will be your friend.

You have to wonder for the odd chance of a chargeback on a low value item, if it is worth keeping POP for more than six months.

If it doesn't cost you to do so, why not? Don't forget a chargeback comes with a £14 fee.

Well as I got hit with a double chargeback the other day from the same buyer, for transactions in February - which I won because I could provide POP - I'd say it's worth it.

    That's 2 x £10 sales and 2 x £14 additional fees I would have lost if I couldn't provide POP from 8 months ago. About £48 on the line.

i always retain the proof of postage receipt for 6 months. I have had a chargeback carried out on me after 5 months, i uploaded the tracking number at the time of postage, but had to upload a photo of the receipt showing the postcode & tracking number 5 months later. Case was settled in my favour the same day. Without the receipt i feel this would not of happened.

    Best of keeping them.

  • I agree with curty510. I keep proof of postage for six months. Unless the buyer has left feedback, in which case I generally dispose of them. But I'm on off-loading non-electrical items, various collections of 'stuff' which once assessed by recipient and positive feedback left - I'm happy to get rid of evidence of posting. If no feedback and then months later a problem, you have the receipt. Post Office don't accept claims after - from memory - three months so it really is just for Paypal and Ebay.

Paypal offer a service for which we pay but then charge US £14.00 for receiving a Paypal payment from a buyer using a stolen card? is that correct?

The proof of posting is to stop a PayPal chargeback for fraudulent use of a card, feedback is immaterial to that so don't use feedback as a guide to keeping pops or not. They should *always* be retained as long as possible.

Paypal make a charge if you don't abide by their protection programmes. If you do, you are home and dry. If not, then you pay. It's all in their T&C.
