Easyjet Car Hire Rip Off

I recently booked a flight from Edinburgh to Bristol with Easyjet and followed the link to book car hire through Europcar costing £86.94. On arrival at Bristol Airport Europcar I was told that because I booked using easyjet.com and not the easyjet.co.uk site the price did not include insurance! I was forced to pay an additional £168 for insurance for 7 days otherwise I was liable for the full £18000 in the event of something happening to the car. I did notice that the price was displayed in dollars and pounds on my print out but thought nothing of it as I had paid in pounds.
Has anyone else had any experience of this? Any ideas?

It would be very unusual for it not to include any insurance. Europcar probably upsold you their zero excess cover. SOunds like they may have been less than honest with you. I buy an annual excess insurance for around £40.0 -

Very few US rental companies include basic insurance and renters either have insurance coverage from their own vehicle policy or they take out cover with the hire company.
If you do a test booking on the Europecar.com website and you don't change your country of residence to the UK, this is what you get with that booking (It's for a 5 day hire from Bristol airport).Price includes
All mandatory fees (LAF)
Airport/Railway Station Surcharge
VAT (See full T&Cs)
Price excludes
Collision and damage protection USD 121.22 per rental
Theft protection USD 121.22 per rental
Personal accident protection including personal effects USD 80.81 per rental
Windscreen, lights and tire protection USD 90.91 per rental
Any fuel that you use in the vehicle during your rental.
A deposit on your credit card will be requested at your arrival in station.0 -
If the OP booked via the .com website and if their residence was shown as the USA then not having any insurance included is normal.
I live in Edinburgh so I don't think I should have been charged extra for insurance. I also explained to the woman at the desk I already purchased excess cover elsewhere.0 -

If you had cover in place you could have refused to pay the £168. My car hire insurance cost me less than £20 for seven days cover and that covered up to £50,000 worth of damage so being liable for £18,000 wouldn't have been a problem.
I think you have just fallen for their insurance selling techniques where they try and scare you by saying your liable for large amounts of money if you damage the car.0
