Kitchen worktop and sink fitting quote

I have been quoted £2500 for supplying and fitting laminate Worktops (about 4m) and a sink and tap (believe all items cost approx £420).
3 curves to do on worktop and cutout for sink and hob. Also to remove existing worktop and sink and 2 small sections of tiling.

Does this seem fair?

Wow, now thats quite a quote. Had to re-read it a few times to make sure I wasn't dreaming.

Materials aside if you said 1 days work for one man to replace the worktops . Two small areas of tiles shouldn't take more than a hour or two so my educated guess would be around 10hrs for one man. So even if you said £30 per hr thats £300 , plus materials £420-00 makes a total of £720-00..........

Quoted £2500 less above work £720 leaves £1,780-00 for the labour to fit the sink...

Sounds like he is chancing his arm, doesn't really want the work so if you gave him the go ahead he could book next years holiday early..

As I mentioned fitting the worktops, curves etc is no more than 1 days work for 1 man.

Not sure where you are but even in London that would be an extreme rip-off.............. The better quality laminate worktops are made by Duropal but are still relatively cheap at about £100-00 for a 4m length.

I'm in North West; he said it would be 3 days work and quote doesn't include re-tiling! he was getting a colleague to do that - dread to think what that would have cost as well. Wanted £1k in cash (for next years hol?)

One guy couldn't do that in a day properly, I love the way labor is charged only from the minute on site and stops the second completed.
Pick up, transport worktops, pick up tools, measure and cut worktops, router out three joints (which is six routering cuts - one for each face) remove and dispose old stuff, fit new worktops, cut out and fit sink...
Anyone who can do that alone in a day please come and work for me.

Id say quote is high - at least £1000 too high, but lets not get silly. Tradesman has to buy and run his van, pay insurance, buy and maintain expensive tools, replace tools (A new 68mm worktop bit for every job), supply consumables, fixings, sealants, plumbing fittings etc. Of course all of these things are completely free, you just divide the hours on site by the cost for the labor charge.

If you assume 2 guys 2 days @ £200 each and add materials you would have a quote that would be on the high side. I don't know how much your worktops are but add onto the cost about £50 for everything else and you have a reasonable estimate on the high side of ok.

I can only post from my experience..............The vast majority of tradesmen base their quotes on how much they want to earn in a day. Then they price into that their profit margin. This figure in most cases will include travel (one way at least) to the site unless its long distance. Their rate includes running costs of being in business so insurance, tools, van etc.

Worktops delivered to site so no transporting of worktops. With so many different designs, finished, edge details etc its unlikely that any stockists locally would have the worktops in stock and why wouldn't you get them delivered to site?. More chance of damaging them before you even get to site so let someone else worry about the delivery.

Any tradesmen who couldn't replace the worktops in one day is either not a tradesman or far too slow and wouldn't get the work. Worktop Router jigs make the job easy and as you know a complete joint M&F can be done in 30-45min easily. I didn't include the sink fitting in that days work. Ripping 2 small areas of tiles wouldn't take long even if they were stuck fast, plaster would come off with them. I'm reading the OP woorktops as being 4m length cut up to form 4 worktops with 3 joints. If they mean more than 1 x 4m worktop then I would allow for a labourer for a day otherwise my arms would fall off. So on theat basis add another £100 for a labourer.:D

The OP doesn't actually mention 3 joints anyway, they said "3 curves" but may mean joints so I stand by my calculations for joints, curves can also be done with a jig.

Running costs are included in the day rate a tradesman sets himself so he has a day rate he wanst to earn and sticks some profit on.

Do you buy complete new router cutters ?, works out cheaper to use Trend replaceable ones where you keep the same shank but replace just the cutter so it works out cheaper. Agree about sealant, fixings, etc so add £25 to my price.

2 men @ £200 per day so you think that job requires 2 tradesmen for 2 days?. That is over the top in my opinion but at least the op has another opinion.
