Help with blog

Morning,

Before I ask this question, it should be noted that I have very limited web hosting knowledge so apologies in advance if my terminology isn't correct.

My DS has a blog and I'm the one paying the bill, so I want to ensure I'm not paying too much.

The blog is just that, a diary of sorts.

My understanding is - the domain name - let's say is https://www.chancesare.co.uk - is accessed on 1and1.co.uk (does that make them the host?).

On there I seem to be paying £17.96 per 3 months for something called 1and1 Website Builder Plus. I have no idea what that is. Does anyone know it is needed? I also seem to be paying £10.99 plus VAT a year for the domain. In total, it seems to be costing me £85.01 a year? It sounds expensive.

I've tried googling but am going round in circles. Is his blog on the best site and should I move it somewhere else, if yes, how on earth do I do it?

Many thanks.

That makes them the registrar (i.e. the people who charge you to register the domain name).

That would be hosting, I'd guess. Presumably Website Builder Plus lets you upload content to 1and1's servers, where they will host that content (i.e. make it available on the web).

I'm no expert on this, but there are probably cheaper ways to get content hosted. I have a small amount of free hosting (which they only provide to existing subscribers now). I'd imagine you could find cheaper hosting...?

It should be £6.99/yr plus VAT. At least, according to the 1&1 site. I use 123-reg, myself, but it's the same price there.

Hopefully someone else will be able to tell you the cheapest place for hosting. Shelling out £85/yr to post a blog seems expensive to me, if you're not making any profit from it.

There a lot of free blogging sites with plenty of built in blog management tools. You just don't get the kudos factor of your own domain name.
  • If you are after a blog website you need Wordpress.

You can register a domain with one company and host with another by changing the nameservers.

I would leave the domain with 1&1 but host the site somewhere cheaper like Tsohost. (cloud hosting £14.99/year)

Installing wordpress is very easy and there are lots of free themes and plugins. The web is full of tutorials for Wordpress

From Tsohost home page go to Support > Knowledgebase and search for "wordpress" for details of how to install and get started

    I am still having issues.

The domain is hosted on 1and1 and seems wasteful to move it as the year only just renewed.

I have set up a wordpress account and whilst that was free opted to pay £11 a year to redirect it to my domain.

I paid the fee, went through the process which involved little more than giving wordpress the domain name.

Now the wordpress name does land on the domain name page but the domain name page is blank, despite there being content in the wordpress page. What have I done wrong?
