Cheapish hort stay ideas?

(Edit: Title should be "SHORT stay ideas", no idea what a 'hort stay' is, but will try anything lol)

My better half wants to get away for a couple of nights, but can't be too far from home, and can't cost too much (and I'm completely clueless when it comes to UK breaks). Sooooo...

Anyone any ideas for somewhere nice to visit for a weekend, within about 40 miles of Milton Keynes? Ideally somewhere relatively scenic, not in the middle of a town or city.
