Airport Tax Refund

Hi,

I use this site regularly, particularly Flight checker, but 1st post.

I need to cancel a flight I have booked with jet2.com and they are refusing to refund me. I understand them not refunding the price of the flight, which was about £2.50 each way but I would like them to refund the tax, which is about £20 each way.

My argument is that the tax is not theirs, and only applies if I actually use the airport, which I won't be and they only pass it on to the government if I actually fly.

Does anyone know the rules, am In entiteld to get the tax refunded?

You are legally entitled to a refund on your taxes (though probably not the fees or charges). The conditions of your ticket determine whether you'll also get back the fare you paid, although at £2.50 your journey was probably non-transferable and non-refundable.

The airline is legally obliged to show the cost breakdown on your ticket so you should be able to see how much to expect. However, many airlines (particularly low costs) impose a fairly hefty administration fee (approx. £25) which would not only make a claim fairly pointless, it could even result in extra cost being due from the claimant!

Whilst on principle Jet2 shouldn't be allowed to keep your taxes as profits, this is only one loophole that allows them to offer such low prices in the first place. If I were you, I'd walk away and accept the loss. Sorry.
