Central Heating Chemical Flush Necessary?

Hi All,

We recently bought a 1950s ex local authority house. It still has an old back boiler and will need updating in the future but for now everything basically works fine. We took the radiators off so we could decorate and are now wondering if we should take the opportunity to have the system chemically flushed and a filter fitted when all the radiators go back on. Does anyone know if this is necessary for a system which will ultimately be replaced albeit not for a few years (we hope!). Trying to spend as little money as possible at this stage so any advice appreciated!

If it is working properly, no cold spots or cold rads then just flush with water. You have to fill, run and empty several times to flush out. Any radiators you have off take outside and hose them out several times, shake them up when half full etc. Once its all back on and not leaking don't forget to put inhibitor in £6.50 from Toolstation ... http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p94504?searchstr=inh

  • Thanks guys - Mr Generous this sounds sensible and saves us a very much needed couple of hundred quid.

Prosaver - finger crossed the back boiler keeps going for as long as yours!

Got a Baxi Bermuda back boiler here, and whilst it is still working, there is no point in replacing it. My gas consumption is fairly low, so with any potential savings on the gas bill would take a lifetime to recover installation costs.

Another vote for removing radiators taking outside and flushing out upside down with a hose as and when you get the chance . Got mine at the old place from a dirty black to clear by the time I'd finished and put in inhibitor
