    The other way of looking at it is that if you tell them something which doesn't affect the premium, then they didn't need to know - but it didn't hurt to tell them. If, otoh, it DID affect the premium, then they DID need to know, and the consequences of them finding out later would be much greater...
  • This Guardian article reckons that one of these courses can increase your insurance premiums.

    This bit doesn't make sense though:

    Unlike penalty points, insurance firms cannot check whether a driver has taken a speed awareness course unless they admit to it, as this information is held by local police forces rather than the DVLA. However, if you fail to reveal that you have and later make a claim, you could find that your policy is invalid.

    If the insurance company can't check if you've taken a speed awareness course, then how can they avoid paying out on a claim? It's small, but important contradictory details like these that I spot in many articles.

    The most likely way that an insurer will find out is that somebody forgets that they forgot to tell the insurer.
