Not quite "motoring", but nearest thing I could find that matches
Hi,
If this needs to be moved to another forum, I apologise profusely in advance, but I couldn't find a relevant forum.
My local harbour is putting the rental on my moorings for my boat, and I am thoroughly frustrated by this - as if £600per month isn't enough already - it's not like its even a big boat!.
Anyway, has anyone ever managed to negotiate down mooring fees with any success? I don't want to have to move out of Poole Harbour, its so nice there. I realise that I could probably go elsewhere, but only going there once a year, I like to have a nice time, so moving out of the nicer harbours will be a bit of a let down.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

600 a month to tie a boat to a pontoon? If explains quite well, the definition of a boat as a hole in the water into which you pour money.
Sorry, no advice, but guess it is supply and demand. Is there anywhere cheaper?0 -
Maybe reading this wrong, but do you mean you pay £7200 to park a boat you only use once per year?
That would seem to lend credence to the saying "if it floats or flies..." rent it0 -
I have never really looked at it annualised like that. Still, its a nice harbour, and has good security, and the local restaurants and the like are lovely. Would be a shame to have to relocate.0

Found your topic and just had to register here! as im looking for a move myself!
its the fact that they charge by the meter that gets me. I'm in Brighton Marina, which is nice, owned by premier marina (recommended). I re-mortgaged the house last year to go from a 14m to 21m boat and the price had nearly doubled! I'm still in the same bloody spot!“If you believe in yourself first, you’re unstoppable.” Mendell Grinter :j0 -
Sell the boat, and use the £7200 to pay for your holiday in a luxury hotel each year, or to hire a boat for your holiday.
I did some simillar maths, as I fancied upgrading from a tiny caravan that owes me nothing, and lives on the drive, to a motor home.
For what the motor home would cost annually in storage fees, depreciation, insurance, tax MOT etc, I could get a flock of doves to carry my caravan by golden threads to the most expensive site in the country, have all my meals delivered, and be driven round in a golden chariot on the days I actually use it.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Why would you have to relocate? Agree with everyone else, why are you paying so much for a once a year holiday? Sell the boat and rent once a year in Poole, you'll save a fortune and can probably have a nicer boat for your holiday as well., one that nees no maintenance, insurance, suffers no depreciation, etc.0 -
Registered to reply to another newbie. Four unrelated posts in eight minutes. Will it be you or seagrave that discovers a great new mooring at reasonable cost?real_athlete wrote: »Found your topic and just had to register here!
Maybe Tennerburner will help.

I was going to bid on HMS Illustrious earlier this year, but came up against the same problem - apparently just parking it in the river Fraw wasn't an option

Just buy HMS Illustrious and moor it wherever you choose.
Who is going to argue with an Aircraft Carrier?

this seems to be heading off topic.
Seagrave, all I can say is pay annually, not monthly for the best deal (like car insurance) and if you're being charge under £2 per meter per day, then you're doing ok.
it's one of those markets where they know if you can afford the boat in the first place, then you must have the money to afford the high running costs.
again its like cars, Porsche don't have to charge £130+ per hour for labour (Ford dealers probably dont) but they know if you have a 911 they can get away with it. Anything to do with yachts/boats and the price goes up!“If you believe in yourself first, you’re unstoppable.” Mendell Grinter :j0
